The role of Governors in school is to act with integrity, objectivity and honesty with the best interests of the school. They should be able to be open about, and prepared to explain their decisions and actions. They take a largely strategic role in the running of the school, helping to set out aims and objectives, policies and targets for achieving the objectives. The governing body should act as a “critical friend” to the head teacher, providing advice and support.(Department for Education, 2012)

Mr S McCartney (Head Teacher)

Mr McCartney is the school head teacher, who has been at Black Horse hill juniors since 2013. He was previously Deputy Head teacher at a school in Chester for 6 Years. Prior to teaching , Mr McCartney started work as an engineer, and also worked in the theatre for several years. for more information please visit his special message page.
Mrs K. Ellson (Chair)
Chair of Governors, Finance/Staffing Committee, Curriculum and standards Committee, Pay/Performance Management Committee, Staff Dismissal/Capability/Discipline Committee, Complaints Committee.
Mrs Ellson is now the chair of governors at Black Horse Hill Junior School. Mrs Ellson has Over 20 years scientific research & development experience at UNILEVER, 6 years project management experience and has been a member of Black Horse Hill Junior School Governing Body for 6 years.
Rev. C Coverley (Vice-Chair)
Vice- Chair of governors. Premises/Health & Safety Committee, Pay/Performance Management Appeals Committee, Staff Dismissal/Capability/Discipline Committee, Complaints Committee, nominated RE/ PSCE & SMSC governor.
Reverend Coverley is a co-opted governor, she has been the reverend at the local church, St Michael’s, for 9 years now. This where we go to present our Christmas nativity. Reverend Coverley often comes into school to lead the children in assemblies. Her Child is in Year 5.
Mrs K. Bird
Nominated Mathematics link Governor, Standards/Curriculum Committee, Pay/Performance Management Appeals Committee, Staff Dismissal/Capability/Discipline Appeals Committee, Complaints Committee, Nominated English link Governor. Mrs Bird is a parent governor whose children are currently in year three and five. She has 14 year teaching experience, 10 years of management and SENCO experience as well. Mrs Bird is a Head teacher at a Wirral primary school.
Mrs V. Colebourn
Standards and Curriculum Committee, Pay and Performance Management Appeals, Nominated SEN Governor.
Mrs Colborne is a retired teacher,with a lifetime of experience teaching in primary schools. Teaching roles also included SENCO, acting assistant Head, and music/humanities/community leading in school. Mrs Colebourn has a keen interest in classical music, ballet and fine arts.
Councillor D. Elderton
Finance/Staffing Committee, Pay/Performance Management Committee, Staff Dismissal/Capability/Discipline Appeals Committee.
Mr Elderton is a Local Authority representative governor. Previously, he has been a governor at local high schools for many years . Mr Elderton has 32 years experience in the construction industry, where for 15 years he was a Divisional Director; constructing multi-million pound hospitals & hotels. Councilor Elderton was elected Councillor for Wirral in 2000.
Mr I. Mason
Finance and Staffing Committee, Pay and Performance Management Appeals Committee, Premises Health and Safety. Nominated LAC and Safeguarding Governor. Mr Mason is a co-opted governor. He has 28 years experience as a lawyer in local Government, including Education law matters. Has also has experience as a management trainee in retail.
Mrs P. Moss
Standards/Curriculum Committee, Staff Dismissal/Capability/Discipline Committee, Nominated Science Governor.
Mrs Moss is a parent governor, her child is in year 5. Mrs Moss has 22 years teaching experience and has been a school Science leader for 18 years. Mrs Moss has been a Guide/Brownie leader for 28 years . She is now a teacher at a Wirral school.
Mr R. Pritchard
Premises/Health & Safety committee Committee.
Mr Pritchard is a co-opted governor. He has been the school caretaker since 2012 and now works in the kitchen as well. Prior to that he has 20 years’ experience working in and running two petrol stations.and has been a taxi driver in Chester & Ellesmere Port. Mr Pritchard has Level 1 and Level 2 in BSL (British Sign Language)
Mrs K. Taylor(Assistant Head Teacher)
Mrs Taylor is the school’s teaching governor. responsible for assessment and progress. Mrs Taylor trained at Edge Hill College. She Taught in Ormskirk for 6 years before coming to Black Horse Hill in 2003 and was promoted to Assistant Head in 2010. Mrs Taylor ran the London Marathon in 2008 – it took 5 Hrs 17 mins! She loves spending time with her close family – and is even on the same netball team as her sister!
Mr Jones has recently been elected as a Parent Governor of our school. He has a vested interest in the performance, management and governance of Black Horse Hill Schools, having three children across the Infant and Junior schools. Mr Jones currently works in Further Education. He is a qualified Health and Safety professional and was previously a serving police officer who has dedicated his working life to serving the public and community.
